What is the difference between lip and time sync?

If you want to record the script of an existing video or animation in a different language, you will have to deal with the issue of synchronization. The recording needs to match the image in terms of content and duration. If a video is properly synchronized, the recorded voice and the image are in harmony with each other. You can achieve this in two ways: lip sync and time sync.Screenshot 2022-04-29 at 14.03.01

Time sync

If a video is time sync, that means the beginning and the end of the recorded script match up exactly to the image, as well as to the content. The recorded script does not, however, match the movements of the mouth of any person you see in the video.

Lip sync

If a video is lip sync, not only are the duration and content matched up to the recording, so are movements of the mouth. With a good quality lip sync, the viewer can hardly tell the synchronization was edited.

What does Voicebooking offer in terms of lip or time synchronization?

Voicebooking is an excellent partner for time synchronization. That starts with the translation. Our translators are always aware to make the translation fit the duration and content when it comes to time sync assignments.

When recording, the voice over too will take time synchronization into account. They will speed up or slow down when necessary and add emphasis to match the video. We therefore advise to always share the video for which the recording is intended. You can upload your video to us in your project briefing.

If you also leave post production to us, we will make sure the script for your voice over matches seamlessly in your video.

Because our voice overs reside in the country of the language they record in, we work with voice overs who have home studios. This is a disadvantage when it comes to lip synchronization. We are therefore not the right partner for lip synchronization. For a good quality lip sync, we advise you to join your voice over in the studio when recording.
